Curriculum

Our curriculum is traditional with cutting edge resources and delivery. We offer a wide selection of A Level subjects that will provide the classic route to any university recognised around the world. We offer a curriculum which will intellectually challenge ambitious and confident individuals who want to gain entry to the most competitive degree courses. This enables our students to focus on their strengths and gain the kind of deep subject-specific understanding that universities value so highly, while also helping them to develop and demonstrate independent learning skills.

A-Levels are also qualifications that continue to be valued and understood by universities, providing excellent preparation for the step up to undergraduate courses. We offer a varied subject choice at A-level, all of which are taught by top quality and enthusiastic subject specialists who will inspire a love of their subject into their students. In addition to timetabled classes, there is a wealth of subject extension activities and societies, a dedicated tutor system and subject-specific clinics at protected times, all of which are designed to help Sixth Formers make the most of their ability.

All tutors are experts in working specifically with Sixth Formers and are individually selected for each student based on their personal interests and areas of academic expertise. They not only provide guidance through A levels but also with the UCAS process and potential career choices. There is also a strong emphasis on research and independent learning to encourage deep subject specific understanding that is valued highly by universities.

The delivery of the curriculum in Sixth Form is through:

Taught sessions

Tutorial groups

University lecturers visiting the school

Research projects

Practical activities and fieldwork

Industry-based placements and internships

The wider aspects of provision are developed through an enhanced extra-curricular programme that runs alongside academic study. Our enrichment opportunities are vast and help the students build their skills in organisation, creativity, teamwork, communication and leadership whilst further developing their academic skills and talents. There are also opportunities for international experiences through our induction programme and Sixth Form students regularly have the opportunity to participate in wide range of trips. These expeditions offer students the chance to extend their learning beyond the classroom, develop practical skills and explore the wider world. Through our close collaboration with established universities we provide an innovative programme of complementary studies to broaden student horizons and further develop life skills.

University Guidance

Studying A-Levels at Scarisbrick provides a stepping-stone to top-level universities. The Higher Education landscape is an ever changing one that has undergone, and continues to undergo, profound change. For students to be as well prepared for their university application as they can be it is essential that they are given the knowledge to best navigate their way through the myriad of courses and universities on offer. Scarisbrick Hall Sixth Form aims to provide this through a variety of different ways that will enable students to make wise and informed decisions regarding their plans for Higher Education.

Our aim is to help every student to gain a place in Higher Education either at the end of the Upper Sixth or, if a student chooses to, following a gap year. In order to achieve this we offer comprehensive and expert advice at every stage of the applications process. We will assist in identifying the right programme at the right university for every student. Unlike many schools we start the process of university application early in the Lower Sixth in order that students can give themselves the best chance of success. Comprehensive and expert advice on university and careers is provided by a dedicated Higher education team supporting students upon entry into the Sixth Form.

For those students aspiring to Oxbridge and other top universities to read competitive courses such as Medicine and Veterinary Science, there is a coordinated extension programme, weekly cross-curricular discussion groups, preparation sessions for interview and university tests and a general and subject-specific interview process. For more information see our dedicated page.

Personalised Mentoring

We appreciate that Sixth Form is a demanding time for students and that they will need support and guidance at different stages throughout their two years of study. In order to aid this, teaching groups are small and a range of teaching styles are employed, partly to prepare students for the less structured teaching approach they will meet in Higher Education. Where students require further assistance the school provides guidance and support in all subject areas including advice on University choices and Careers which is second to none. The Sixth Form team is always available to advise students in all aspects of study and personal life and communication between student, staff and parents is encouraged to ensure that the best progress can be made. Regular meetings take place between staff and students when support is required in order that guidance and reassurance can be given through our tailored ONE-TO-ONE mentoring programme where each student will work closely with a personal progress tutor.

Throughout the Sixth Form we also hold workshops run by universities to help students write their personal statements as well as bringing in professional experts to offer advice on careers and gap years. We run an Enrichment Week Programme at the end of the Lower Sixth, offering careers carousel talks, CV writing and employability workshops, UCAS drop in clinics, UK and overseas university fairs and more. The world of university applications is a highly competitive one and we do all we can to ensure that our students are one step ahead of the game.
