Research Opportunities

University admissions officers consistently advocate the advantages of having undertaken independent research.

For that reason, we offer various kinds of independent projects in the Lower Sixth; whether it is our internally supported and assessed subject-based research project, entry to national essay prize competitions or the Extended Project Qualification there are plenty of options to choose.

This range of projects not only provides individualised opportunities for students to explore a topic of choice in depth but enables them to develop the skills that will help them excel in higher education – both in terms of their UCAS application and during the courses themselves

Life in the Sixth Form at Scarisbrick provides students with a number of opportunities for personal development. Through our close collaboration with established universities we also provide an imaginative programme of complementary studies to broaden student horizons and further develop life skills.

Programmes such as the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and the Engineering in Education scheme provide excellent research opportunities for students and allow each student to embark on a largely self-directed and self-motivated research project. We encourage creativity and curiosity in terms of research and students are encouraged to look beyond their subject specifications by utilising our University links and specialist Societies.

Lecture Programme

There is also an extensive lecture programme of visiting speakers covering a range of eclectic topics chosen to inspire and inform.

This programme focuses on presentations, performance and debate, often with a cross-curricular theme which will extend and challenge the interest of every student. Scarisbrick Hall believes strongly in this concept of academic enrichment.

Our lecture programme offers an excellent opportunity for Sixth Form students to sample academic life outside the classroom and beyond the curriculum. They will be hosted by academics, entrepreneurs, professionals and writers of national repute who will speak about their areas of expertise and interest, alongside lectures offered by school staff on ‘key themes and current affairs’.

Specialist Pathways

We provide specialist advice and guidance for potential Oxbridge applicants designed to stretch your further, to achieve additional UCAS points and to develop skills prized by top universities including leadership, critical thinking, motivation and management skills

For students who have a clear idea what they are going to progress onto at University we also boast an impressive group of societies that deliver personalised, high level provision in specialist areas. As part of our commitment to excellence, we are one of only a few Sixth Forms nationally that provides this enhanced aspect of Sixth Form education through societies dedicated to key academic disciplines.

Medical Societies

We are one of only a few Sixth Forms nationally that offer a designated Medical Society (MEDSoc) programme which includes activities, events, work experience and volunteering opportunities in addition to visiting speakers from the Medical profession providing added support for determined students looking for successful careers in Dentistry, Medicine, Pharmacy and Veterinary as part of our support for specialist pathways. Running concurrent to this, there will be BMAT/UKCAT training run termly for aspiring Doctors, Medics and Vets to increase the chances of our students securing a place at Medical school.

Our Medical Society aims to construct a programme of activities, events and visiting speakers that will not only stimulate and provoke discussion on medical issues, but will also increase the chances of our students gaining a place at Medical School.
